Developing and Deploying Multihop Wireless Networks for Low-Income Communities

چکیده
We are architecting and deploying a multi-hop wireless network in one of Houston’s most economically disadvantaged neighborhoods. The objective of this network is to empower under-resourced communities with access to technology and educational and work-at-home tools. Here, we present the societal objectives of the network, describe the joint technical and economic objectives that drive its architecture, and discuss future deployment, performance, and research challenges. I. SOCIETAL OBJECTIVES In many homes across the United States, children, youth, and their families have access to the world’s information-technology resources at their fingertips, while in low-income communities, access to technology and the opportunities it provides are often limited to brief periods of computer use and Internet access at school or at the public library [1]. Technology for All (TFA)1 addresses the disparity of opportunity that exists in our cities’ low-income neighborhoods through the tools of technology. By working with local community-based organizations, corporations, foundations, technology providers and public entities, TFA creates educational, economic and personal opportunities for low-income persons and the communities in which they

QoS Provisioning in WMNs: Challenges and a Comparative Study of Efficient Methodologies
Wireless Mesh networks have made it possible to have seamless connectivity in between the community users. WMN is a low cost network supporting multihop communication through a backbone like structure. But, to provide services like neighborhood and community network, broadband home network, building enterprise network QoS provisioning is very much essential. In this paper, we presented a compar...
متن کاملA Lifetime Forecast Scheme for a Distributed Low Duty Cycle Multi-Hop Routing in Wireless Sensor Networks
Wireless sensor nodes become more and more attractive for a broad variety of application scenarios. Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) can be easily deployed and they require by design low maintenance effort. But running installations are still rare, because real world requirements and environmental conditions are even today a big challenge. Especially in multi-hop networks a minimum lifetime of s...
متن کاملCommunity Health Worker Programs to Improve Healthcare Access and Equity: Are They Only Relevant to Low- and Middle-Income Countries?
Background Community Health Workers (CHWs) are proven to be highly effective in low- and middle-income countries with many examples of successful large-scale programs. There is growing interest in deploying CHW programs in high-income countries to address inequity in healthcare access and outcomes amongst population groups facing disadvantage. This study is the first that examines the scope and...
متن کاملDeployment and Evaluation of IEEE 802.11 based Wireless Mesh Networks in Campus Environments
The traditional wireless networks cannot handle new requirements posed on the system. To become independent of backbone networks leading to cheap deployments, the traditional single-hop approach needs to be replaced by its multihop counterpart called Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs). They can be considered as hybrid between wireless infrastructure (WLAN) and ad-hoc networks (MANET). WMNs provide f...
متن کاملEnabling adaptive traffic scheduling in asynchronous multihop wireless networks
We present work-in-progress developing a communication framework that addresses the communication challenges of the decentralized multihop wireless environment. The main contribution is the combination of a fully distributed, asynchronous power save mechanism with adaptation of the timing patterns defined by the power save mechanism to improve the energy and bandwidth efficiency of communicatio...
